1 to 3 Day Guided Canoe Adventures

Dusk Whanganui RiverThe Whanganui National Park has rugged terrain covered in lush native forest with the Whanganui River flowing through it. The river from Taumarunui to Pipiriki is part of the Department of Conservation ‘Great Walk’ network.

Adrift Guided Outdoor Adventures offer a 1 Day, 3 Day or 5 Day Guided Adventure on the Whanganui River. The 3 or 5 day Whakahoro to Pipiriki section is the most popular canoeing section. From Whakahoro, the only access out is by canoe and this remoteness with forest filtered fresh air makes for a rejuvenating holiday. The Canadian Canoes used, are well suited for the rapids and the long still water of the gorges and they hold plenty of gear. Luxuries are a must!

The Whanganui River is rich with Maori and European history, the largest reminder of which is the famous ‘Bridge to Nowhere’. Just like the early explorers, you will see the spectacular sheer gorges rising hundreds of metres to distant ridges and hopefully hear a Kiwi calling, while eating dinner under the stars.

The One Day Tour is from Taumarunui to Ohinepane and takes around 4 hours to complete before we return to base at National Park.  Access points are at Ngahuinga (Cherry Grove) in Taumarunui and we canoe downstream to Ohinepane. Travelling the upper reaches of the Whanganui River, you’ll pass through a mixture of farmland and native bush. You’ll be in for some excitement as you shoot down rapids on this section of the river

The 3 and 5 day tours will cover the most breathtaking scenery including the Bridge to Nowhere en-route and we camp alongside the river each night in huts or campsites. Paddling downstream over the journey you will cover 123km over the trip and travel through bush-clad hills, see waterfalls, travel through gorges and farmland as well as some rapids en-route.
